November 2023 Educator of the Month
Superintendent, Ms. Tammy Chavis, is pleased to announce that Mrs. Brandy Murray, a Pre-K teacher at Laurel Elementary School, has been selected as November’s “Educator of the Month.” Mrs. Murray has been with the Franklin County Community Schools for 18 years. Prior to teaching, Mrs. Murray received an Associate’s degree at Ivy Tech, then proceeded with a Bachelor’s degree at St. Mary of the Woods. Mrs. Murray is currently enrolled at Indiana State University to obtain her Master’s Degree in Educational Technology.
Mrs. Murray was nominated for this honor by a parent of a Laurel Elementary School student. When asked why Brandy should be considered for this recognition, they responded, “Brandy takes a group of 4 year old students and finds ways to teach them on their level. She is encouraging and patient with them. I have watched her with one student in particular. Brandy has a non-verbal student who has faced struggles. She has shown a tremendous amount of patience, and understanding with this student. She does everything she can to help him be involved and learn in his own way. She has even began teaching him and the other students sign language. Her face lights up and she becomes so excited when he has a break through. She lets everyone know what he has done that day and how proud of him she is. Her caring is there for all to see as her wall outside in the hallway is filled with students’ work. Brandy has grown so much over her teaching career and it definitely shows through this year as her star is shining bright!”
In addition to educating children, Brandy is currently the coach of Girls on the Run at Laurel Elementary. When free time allows it, Brandy enjoys spending time with family. When asked what she loves most about her job, Mrs. Murray responded, “The best part of my job is when students have “Aha” moments. These are the moments they realize they can do something hard! I love watching the students learn sign language. I also enjoy all my co- workers.” Brandy also looks “forward to helping preschool become
cohesive with the K-6 elementary school.”
The purpose of the “Educator of the Month” program is to recognize outstanding Franklin County educators who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, leadership in the school, dedication to the students, and involvement in the community.
